about

Old Fortress is my first recorded album of music. It documents the various stages in a relationship as it is heading towards 2 lovers parting ways. When something is your whole world is leaving and you feel up-side down. You will find sounds of fear for the future, hope for healing, poetical processing of a major loss-not only in a relationship but the passing of loved ones as well-all at once. Like a tidal wave I filled with emotion and "Old Fortress" encapsulates some droplets of this wave as a search to process deep mourning and sense of love going away. Only circling to find at the end of a dark road: new love-it is here I honour the divinity of growth and change only to realize that love is eternal through it all and though it transforms it has no end.

I wrote these songs over 5 years. Many while I was living in St. John's Newfoundland. When I returned home to the mainland Ontario I was ready to record and share my music, and with the help of a beautiful and gifted friend Miel Azevedo- I was able to bring the album to life. A primary recording was laid of my voice and guitar by my friend Stephan Angus MacLeod and Miel came with a musical paint brush and made a flowing water colour painting over top. We were in touch this past year, sending voice notes back and forth to discuss the meaning of each song, as to apply this insight to their creative process. The level of love, creativity and intuition that went into their work is breath taking.

I was able to capture land scape sounds on a road trip to B.C. as the album was coming to its final formations, and embroidered these throughout the project. Roosters waking, crows chirping, sea shells chiming, and Miel's instrumentals all gather to cradle the sound of sorrow I needed to swim through to help heal and process intense experiences.
